Cuddled up to a tree trunk, sitting on a broken branch are two little baby raccoons, watching what's going on in downtown Broken Bow. This carving is located on the northeast corner of 1st and Main. This is the only one of the carvings that gives a hint as to its creator. On the back of the trunk is a carved circled which has the initials "SRS (heart) SKS".
Broken Bow, situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, got its beginning from the timber industry. Dierks Lumber Company named the town Broken Bow after the town in Nebraska where they began.
Almost every corner in the downtown area on Main Street and Broadway has a wood carving displayed. We counted 15 during our visit, but there are other raised brick gardens which we assume will hold additional carvings in the future. The gardens are surrounded by brick walls about 15 inches high. They are shaped differently depending on their location, and sit in the road itself, alongside the first parking space. They contain plantings and a carving.
