In Providence, off Benefit Street and within the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) campus, is this fountain among a plaza.
The fountain is located between Benefit Street and Waterman Street, up a hill slope from the RISD Art Museum. There are two flights of stairs: one down to Benefit Street, and one up to Waterman Street. The fountain is among a garden and plaza.
The fountain is made of stone and has three figures on a leaf and above a pool of water. Two of the figures are looking one way, while the third is looking the other way. The third figure also carries a harp. Along the rim of the pool are the following words:
" He descended many floors, a hundred, three hundred down.
For his defense he had a non-stringed lyre.
He turned his he[ad]
And behind him on the path was no one
Only now everything cried to him: Eurydice!
How will I live without you, my consoling one!
And he fell also . . . sun-warmed earth.
Fall asleep, or hearin, die."
The fountain was in good, working order.
