It was an exuberant summer festival that was to find its sad ending on the night of 20 to 21 July 1902. The male choir "loyalty from 1887 to Eilbeck" just wanted back on the paddle steamer "Primus" from Cranz, the Elbe upstream. 206 people were on board when the "Primus" collided with the sea tug "Hansa". It was the heaviest shipwreck on the Elbe, in which over 100 people were killed.

The "Primus" was a decrepit steamer, which was also overloaded. 172 passengers were supposed to board the boat. Since the "Primus" was so sluggish, Captain Johannes Peters decided to leave the heavy water on the south bank and use the lighter water on the north shore. There was less flow here. However, this fairway is reserved for ships going downstream.

The "Hansa" rammed the steamer, which later went under. Many passengers were unable to get to the shore; those who were saved came either on the "Hansa" or on the hurried "dolphin". The captain of the "Hansa" had still tried to push the "Primus" ashore, but did not succeed because of too low draft.

Since 1998, a plaque, not far from the Jacobs staircase, is reminiscent of the bad luck.

On the brass board is written:
