One of two twin granite columns bearing the two patron saints of Venice, this column bears the statue of warrior-saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark. He holds a spear and stands above a crocodile, which is meant to represent a slain dragon.
The columns are thought to have been erected around 1268, when the water was closer and they would have been on the edge of the lagoon, framing the entry to the city from the sea.
