Pegasus is from Greek mythology. He is the product of a union between Poseidon and Medusa. According to the myth Pegasus allows Bellerophon to ride him to defeat the monster Chimera. On the return to Mount Olympus the rider falls off is back. Perhaps this is what the sculpture portrays, the falling rider.
