This figurative sculpture is called "McGnarly the Beach Ent” by the sculptor, Alex Witcombe. McGnarly represents the guardian of the lagoon and protector of small creatures. This driftwood sculpture was created for the Colwood “Eats and Beats Festival” 21 Aug 2017. Abundant driftwood is the ideal medium for sculptures at this beachfront location.
Earlier the sculptor created similar driftwood carvings, a wooly mammoth, mother and child, about 2 km west along the shore at Royal Bay Beachpark. The mammoth pair of sculptures are a natural fit for the site as the remains of mammoths have been found at the former gravel pit now being developed as the Royal Bay Community.
