Apeldoorn is a city in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is the headquarters of the same-named municipality (160,497 inhabitants, source: CBS).
On January 1, 2017, the city counted 141,107 inhabitants. Because Ugchelen is officially counted as the district of Apeldoorn Southwest, the population of the urban area is approximately 148,000 inhabitants. Apeldoorn has only developed into one of the larger places in the country since the beginning of the 20th century.
Apeldoorn is one of the main places in a co-operative region of municipalities and the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel, known as the City Triangle, with Deventer and Zutphen. Apeldoorn is famous for its city parks and its 'green' character. Characteristic is the Apeldoorn cottage structure, with many monumental and detached houses and relatively little high rise. With approximately 100,000 jobs [1], Apeldoorn is an important employment center in central and eastern Netherlands.
