Prior to 1765 Christopher Benson ran a large butter carrying business from the inn. Rebuilt in 1767, it became the post inn and excise office.

The plaque reads

“Crown Hotel

Following a rebuild in 1767 the Crown Hotel was an early post inn and also housed the excise office.”
