"U.S. ARMY MULTIPLE LAUNCH ROCKET SYSTEM (MLRS)
The MLRS Self-Propelled Launcher/Loader is a tracked artillery rocket and missile system consisting of the M993 Carrier Vehicle, the M270 Launcher and the M269 Launcher/Loader Module. Each M270 carries up to 12 rockets, each equipped with 644 high explosive grenades for anti-personnel and light vehicle engagement. The three-person crew can fire the 12 rockets in less than 60 seconds and reload in 9 minutes.
The MLRS Family of Munitions includes the MLRS, guided missile MLRS (GMRLS), and the Army tactical missile system (ATACAMS). The U.S. Army first fired the MLRS and the ATACMS in combat during operation Desert Storm in Southwest Asia on February 13, 1991, firing more than 12,000 MLRS rockets and 32 Army TACMS against critical targets.
The MLRS is used by the US Army allies around the world. This unit, serial number GSRS-3-M3 is an early production unit, using the initial name of the system: General Support Rocket System.
