Facing up the sloping hillside from the column (Great Alpine Road side), the grey granite, upper face of the base of the Broken Column is for 'the Great War' [World War One], and reads:
"GREAT WAR
1914 - 1918
A Tribute of Love
Erected by Parents
and Friends
in Sacred Memory of
Our Fallen Soldiers
Who Gave Their Lives
for God King & Country
Lest We Forget"
Then, on the other three upper faces are the soldier's names, and their ages.
