This Broken Column Monument was "erected by Parents and Friends in Sacred Memory of Our Fallen Soldiers who gave their lives for God, King & Country."

Cropped section, of one of the faces of this very symbolic monument, as many NEVER had their remains returned to Australia!

Facing southeast, up the sloping hillside from the Cenotaph (Great Alpine Road side), the grey granite, upper face of the base of the Broken Column is for 'the Great War' [World War One], and reads:

   "GREAT WAR
    1914 - 1918
 A Tribute of Love
Erected by Parents
   and Friends
 in Sacred Memory of
 Our Fallen Soldiers
 Who Gave Their Lives
for God King & Country
   Lest We Forget"
Then, on the other three upper faces are the soldier's names who died in World War One, that the Broken Column is symbolic for, and their ages.

On the lower face of the base is:

" This Broken Column,
Symbolic of lives cut short,
is Dedicated to the Memory of
     the Men and Women
 of this District who Served
Australia in War and Conflict."

** THIS is where I personally got the importance and Symbolism of the Broken Column, as a category in Waymarking. **
I was so emotionally touched (HIT) that I found it very hard to take the photographs!

Underneath the "GREAT WAR" [World War One] tribute, on the lower face (while you are facing the Great Alpine Road) is the Tribute for local soldiers of World War Two, whose lives were cut short, and it reads:

"World War. 1939 - 1945"
Costello K.P.	28 Age
Kerr P.C.	22
Lanteri J.	21
McCartin P.L.	29
