The life of the Saint-Eutrope church was eventful until the 19th century. To honor the saint's relics, Cluniac monks founded a monastery in the 9th century, and built a sumptuous two-storey church.
First a crypt, a real low church located under the choir of the upper church, the latter extending to the west by a nave of the same length.
The city was a step up to Compostela: it was necessary to be able to welcome the numerous pilgrims come to honor the saint. Pope Urban II consecrated the church in 1096.
The building, huge for the Saintonge, was decorated with magnificent capitals, some of which still remain in the crypt and in the upper church. The apse was extended in the 16th century.
Located outside the walls of the city, the church had to suffer vandalism over the ages. During the Wars of Religion, she was devastated and burned. But, every time, repaired.
The imposing bell tower in Gothic flamboyant is an addition wanted by Louis XI, at the end of the 15th century. But the worst was yet to come: state vandalism.
In 1803, to avoid the repair of a pillar, the prefect of Charente-Inférieure decided to bring down the entire nave to the transept, depriving Saintes of a real Romanesque gem.
As a result, the church was "out of step": the old choir became the current nave; the old apse, the current choir. The glass roof, part of which relates the life of St. Eutrope, dates from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

La vie de l'église Saint-Eutrope a été mouvementée jusqu'au XIXe siècle. Pour honorer les reliques du saint, des moines clunisiens fondèrent un monastère au IXe siècle, puis firent construire une fastueuse église à deux niveaux.
D'abord une crypte, véritable église basse située sous le chœur de l'église haute, celui-ci se prolongeant à l'ouest par une nef de même longueur.
La ville était une étape jusqu'à Compostelle : il fallait pouvoir accueillir les nombreux pélerins venus honorer le saint. Le pape Urbain II consacra l'église en 1096.
Le bâtiment, immense pour la Saintonge, était décoré de magnifiques chapiteaux, dont une partie subsiste encore dans la crypte et dans l'église haute. L'abside a été allongée au XVIe siècle.
Située hors des murs de la ville, l'église eut à souffrir du vandalisme aux cours des âges. Pendant les guerres de Religion, elle fut dévastée et incendiée. Mais, à chaque fois, réparée.
L'imposant clocher en gothique flamboyant est une adjonction voulue par Louis XI, à la fin du XVe siècle. Mais le pire restait à venir : le vandalisme d'État.
En 1803, pour éviter la réparation d'un pilier, le préfet de Charente-Inférieure décida de faire abattre toute la nef jusqu'au transept, privant Saintes d'un véritable joyau roman.
De ce fait, l'église s'est trouvée «décalée» : l'ancien chœur est devenu la nef actuelle ; l'ancienne abside, le chœur actuel. La verrière, dont une partie relate la vie de saint Eutrope, date des XIXe et XXe siècles.
