It was initially built as a single-storey Hotel in 1900 for Mr James Drew, and opened on New Years Day (1 January, 1901). "Snowy River Mail, 5 January, 1901 (visit link) It initially had twelve rooms for customers to rent.

It soon (1903) changed hands, and I could not find out when it became known as "Marshall's" Commonwealth Hotel. [Somewhere 'along the line' it had changed licensee from James Drew to Margaret Agnes Drew - speculation abounds] Certainly by the 1930 it was double-storey building, with quite a few more rooms to rent.
