Black Swan
Cygnus atratus
The only mostly black swan in the world. Nests are constructed on small islands or as floating nests using aquatic plants. Swans need a long take-off free of vegetation. Open water also protects cygnets (young) from predators such as foxes.
Size: 1- 1.4 m, wingspan 1.6 - 2 m.
Habitat: Large expanses of open fresh water or salt water with abundant aquatic vegetation; pasture, crops and mud-flats.
Diet: Aquatic plants

This sign also gives good information on how the Orbost Waste Water Treatment Plant treats effluent. [As part of the Waterwatch East Gippsland initiative.]
