Explorer's Cabin
Explorations like that of the Fremont Party of 1846 had need for quick and reliable shelters to keep them from the extreme elements. This cabin represents what one of those explorers might have created, with minimum of labor and the maximum of results.
This cabin was originally located 7 miles Northwest of the town of Crescent, Oregon and about 150 feet from Crescent Creek.
The cabin is near 13 feet wide by about 14 feet long. The main form of chinking (or caulking) is wedge cut slabs driven in tight between the logs.
Note the smaller size of the logs, the notched corners, the dirt floor and the fire pit all indicating expediency for ease of erection.
