Having one-fifth of the world's fresh water, Canada has nearly countless drainage basins. Just in Ontario (which is not the largest geographic jurisdiction), more than 30 of those drainage basins are formally arranged into
Conservation Authorities. These waymarked signs (one English, one French) mark the boundary (divide) between the
South Nation watershed and the
Rideau Valley watershed. The watershed of the South Nation River comprises more than 3,900 square kilometres. The South Nation River flows north, emptying into the
Ottawa River.
Interestingly, there is no welcome sign posted by the Rideau conservation authority. Posted co-ordinates are for the English language marker, which happens to include a geocache. This site is a rare example of a watershed divide not being on high ground.
