This post office is located at 29586 State Highway 89 and serves a population of about 50. The first post office opened here in 1940 and closed in 1944, and reopened in 1952 (Wikipedia).
The name comes from the commumity’s location southeast of the dam with forms Lake Almanor which was built in 1910 with modifications in 1927 and 1962. The dam is known as Canyon Dam or Lake Almanor Dam (Wikipedia). The community was originally called Canyon Dam but is now known as Canyondam as the Post Office sign shows and as the State Highway map shows. But the US Post Office website shows it as Canyon Dam.
