At the intersection of Church Avenue and Mena Street on the Courthouse grounds, this beautiful war monument stands facing the corner of the property. A little sitting area, and other monuments and flagpoles are located here also.
The monument consist of several attached granite slabs, each approximately six foot square. The center has a colored picture of the U.S. flag engraved and is inscribed with "Polk County War Memorial - Honor the Fallen". Five of the other six slabs list Polk County veterans who gave their lives in time of war. They are listed under World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We can only hope that the remaining empty slab never has to be inscribed.
