In 1773 Elizabeth Metcalfe inherited the old George Inn. Her sons, John and George, expanded the brewing side of the business. The original premises, built in 1775, were completely rebuilt in 1854. The Metcalfes’owned the brewery until the early 20th century when it was closed. The buildings were demolished in 1963.
The plaque reads
“The Nidderdale Brewery
The brewery, originally located in the George and Dragon Inn, expanded here in 1855 until it closed in the early 20th century. The buildings were demolished in 1963.”
