The castle of Kylemore was built by Mitchell Henry and his wife Margaret from 1867 to 1871.
In 1903 Mitchell Henry sold the castle and the lands to the Duke of Manchester. In 1920 the Benedictine monastery acquired the castle.
In September 1923 the nuns in Kylemore opened an international boarding school and a day school for girls. In the 1980s 80 schoolchildren and 120 day schoolchildren were in Kylemore.
In June 2010 the school was closed.
The main entrance hall of the abbey and the three adjoining rooms have been restored and are open to the public. The rest of the abbey is inhabited by the nuns.
