Today's wander took me to Dulwich where I took in the Dulwich Picture Gallery. In the grounds there is a Giles Gilbert Scott "K2" telephone kiosk that are predominantly found in London with "K6" boxes being more prevalent away from the capital.

What got me excited about this box was the old fashioned Button "A" and "B" telephone - a long time since I have seen one of them. Who remembers having to put 4D, in old money, into the box and then having to press button "A" to get connected or button "B" to get your 4D back. Who remembers "tapping" the phone to avoid paying the 4D? A bit of dexterity was required but it was possible.

The Dulwich Picture Gallery incorporates a mausoleum where its founders are buried. It is claimed that the roof of the mausoleum gave Giles Gilbert Scott the inspiration for the domed roof of the "K2" kiosk. Photos of the phone box roof and mausoleum roof are included so you can decide for yourself. It is also claimed that Scott's inspiration came from the tomb of Sir John Soane's wife that is located in St Pancras Old Churchyard.
