As of 2004 it is the 2nd-largest airport in Baden-Württemberg (after Stuttgart Airport), and the 19th-largest in Germany with 623,000 passengers per year.
In 2005, a new passenger terminal was inaugurated to the south of the old terminals. Now departures and arrivals are in a single and much larger building.
The airport is favored by discount airlines due to its relatively small size and location which is still within reach from some major cities (Strasbourg, Freiburg, Karlsruhe, and even Stuttgart). It currently provides an excellent low price way to travel to London from this area via the carrier Ryanair.
When flying out of the Schengen area and after proceeding through security and passport control, there is only a small snack bar in the departure lounge. Before passing security there is now a book store and some other shops and a bar.
Baden Airpark was a Canadian military base and airport from 1953 until 1993. The newly founded Baden Airpark GmbH took over the airport in 1995 and the first commercial flight took place on May 17, 1997 to Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
Technically the airport is just a part of Baden Airpark, which also includes facilities for both business and leisure. The latter includes an 18-hole golf course and an enclosed ice rink (both originally part of the Canadian base). From that time stems the name Baden Söllingen, which locals use to denote the airport.
There is no rail service to this airport.
The airport can be reached by bus from the Baden-Baden train station. Besides that there are regular bus services from Freiburg, Strasbourg and Mannheim.
Taxi to Baden-Baden is about 24€.
