In the Piazza dei Signori in the center of the ancient northern Italian city of Padova rises this sculpture of a winged lion on a marble Roman column. In 1870 this sculpture by Natale Sanavio replaced a similarly themed work that was shot down by the French in 1797 when the Republic of Venice fell to the Austrian Empire.
Padova is probably be the oldest city in northern Italy - likely founded around 1200 BC. Venice, only 40kilometers to the east, rose to power in the Middle Ages and made Saint Mark the Evangelist its patron saint. Mark's symbol, the lion, also became the symbol of the republic and a popular theme for Padua's artists as well.
