Specifically, it is the 'Short-beaked Echidna'. With the lower, right-hand side of the sign giving the following information:
"Short-beaked Echidna
Tachyglossus aculeatus
This solitary, egg laying mammal occurs in a greater range of habitats than perhaps any other Australian mammal. It sleeps under bushes or leaf litter, in hollow logs or abandoned burrows.
Size: 300-450 mm
Habitat: Almost all types except large areas of cleared farmland and upland rainforest.
Diet: Termites, ants and other invertebrates exposed with powerful forelimbs and gathered by a long tongue.
There is a good and realistic drawing of an Echidna on the sign. I had seen one the day before, while driving around the area east of here. They are definitely around.
