The church, designed by Woodhead and Hurst, was opened in 1828 to replace the earlier St Mary’s Church located high above the town. The church is of ashlar construction with a slate roof. The church is laid out as a four bay nave with chancel, north and south porches, and a three stage west tower. The east window is attributable to F Comere & J Capronnier of Brussels. The cross of Archbishop Benson, whose family lived in the parish for many generations, is preserved inside.
The plaque reads
“St Cuthbert’s Church
Opened in 1828, replacing St Mary’s church above the town. Inside is a bell which, it is believed, hung originally in Fountains Abbey.”
