As described by the CGS in 1954 (although already monumented by the USGS in 1903):
"AT JEFFERSON, 2 BLOCKS SOUTHWEST OF THE COUNTY COURTHOUSE, AT THE SOUTHEAST ENTRANCE TO THE POST OFFICE, 36 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHEAST CURB OF NORTH MARKET STREET, 9.7 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST CURB OF WEST AUSTIN STREET, 3 FEET ABOVE THE SIDEWALK, SET IN THE TOP OF THE SOUTHWEST CONCRETE BALUSTRADE."
The CGS description is still accurate, and so are its distance estimates. The only correction to be made is that the "POST OFFICE" in question is no longer used as such: it is a 1890 heavy-brick romanesque federal building (registered in the National Register of Historic Places) which used to host the post office -- and prior to that, the courthouse as well -- but is now the Jefferson Historical Museum.
The NGS' currently posted coordinates ("N 32 45 20.0 W 094 20 45.7", or "N 32° 45.333 W 94° 20.762") were reasonably in line with my observations: my measurements came out to "N 32° 45.334 W 94° 20.761", as measured within 10' accuracy and 10+ reading averages.
The station was recovered in great condition, especially for its age (as it was monumented more than a century ago, and the disk still seems to be the original). Some of the pictures I took of the station at the time of the recovery are currently on display on the NGS online database: (
