In Canton, along Washington Street, is Canton Memorial Hall, with a statue of a Civil War era soldier in front of the building and near the road.
Memorial Hall is located at the intersection of Washington Street and Sherman Street, on the northeast corner.
The statue is about one hundred feet north of this intersection.
The statue is a life size figure on a pedestal, located on a brick plaza on the top of a stairway from the sidewalk. The figure faces out to Washington Street. He is standing casually, with one foot forward, holding his gun upright with the butt end resting on the ground. The pedestal is about six feet high. Part of the base is a stone footing, with the following words on it:
"Town of Canton
From
Elijah A. Morse
A.D. 1830"
A small metal plaque is affixed to the top of the pedestal with the following words:
"Town of Canton
Civil War Statue 1890
Saved by: Ernie Ciccotelli 1978
Restored by: Community Preservation Funds 2014"
The link is to an article from the Canton Citizen (local newspaper) that told about the recent restoration in 2014 and the story about a 'prank' that had damage the statue several years before.
