In Canton, along Washington Street, is the Canton Public Library, which has a date over the old entrance that says, "MDCCCCI," 1901.

The library is on the west side of Washington Street, at the south east corner of the intersection with Sherman Street.

The new entrance faces the driveway on the south side. Around the corner on the east side is the old entrance. Above the door is the date.

The Canton Public Library started in 1874 from a collection of books assembled by Frank Webster of the Grand Army of the Republic at a reading room established by the organization that later became known as the canton Public Library. When Memorial Hall was built across the street, the library moved there. In 1901, Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Hemenway had a new building built for the library. The addition was added in 1962.
