The information sign on Nicholson Street has a photo of the Slab Hut in its original position, and has 'to say':
"New settlers lived in simple huts of bush timber and stringy bark. The Slab Hut was built in 1872 by settlers living upstream from Orbost. It was reconstructed in Orbost in 1987 using the original slabs and building techniques."
Colin Wilson, in his Blog site, "Let It Be Food", has a sunnier photo of the Slab Hut, and also 'caught' the resident geese, Lucy and Gladys, who just chased me around when I was there. (
visit link) It was cool when I was there at 3.50 pm, and they had the fire going in the fire place. It is very rustic inside, but they had plenty of leaflets to look at show you of other places to check out while in East Gippsland.
The 'Attribute', for "Own Vehicle", does include: Bicycles, Horses, and pedestrian, as it is near the East Gippsland Trail.
