When, after World War II, the first Lutheran Christians came to the Twist area with the refugees, they found an almost purely Catholic region. They were supervised by Meppen and worship services were first found in schoolrooms and the ev.-ref. Church of Schöninghsdorf.
In the fifties, the second great stream of Lutheran Christians followed the church of Twist. The rapid development of the petroleum industry led to a steady increase in the number of skilled workers and thus to an increase in the Lutheran community, which had been called the Kapellengemeinde Rühler-Twist since 1950. Due to the customs boundary, many Zöllner families also belonged to the municipality sent by Hanover.
On the 13th of October 1953, the foundation stone was laid on the newly acquired church site on the south-north channel for the church, which was now necessary. The Gotteshaus was financed by ev.-luth. Christians from the USA, the Emslandfonds of the ev.-luth. Landeskirche, the Gustav-Adolfwerk, the Twister oilworks and the community members themselves. In August 1954, the Nazareth church was inaugurated, which has about 200 seats. The fast construction period of less than a year is explained by the enormous self-initiative and self-service of the municipality, which is a very proud thing for the members.
