The Cocoa House Movement was a nationwide campaign that formed part of the larger temperance drive. The basic idea was to provide a similar convivial atmosphere to a public house, but without the alcohol. The Royal Cocoa House in Pateley Bridge was built in 1879 as a hotel and also housed the Mechanic’s Institute. In 1893 it became the Liberal Club, which became the Social Club in 1966. It has been known as the Billiards & Snooker clun since 2005.
The plaque reads
“Cocoa House
Built in 1879, cocoa houses were established to combat the heavy drinking which took place in pubs. It became The Liberal Club in 1893 and then The Social Club in 1966.”
