There has been a ford on this site since the earliest times with the earliest mention of a bridge in 1320. The low narrow wooden bridge was replaced by a stone version in the 18thcentury and widened early in the 19th.

The plaque reads

“Pateley Bridge.

Site of a very early ford. the original 14th century wooden bridge was replaced by a stone bridge in the 18th century”
