The ruins of Tomburg, in the Medieval seat of the Palatine, is located on a 316 meter high basalt cone in the village of Wormersdorf. The castle, from which only the ruins of the Bergfried was preserved, was destroyed in 1473 by the Duke of Jülich. The explosions must have been very violent, brick walls at the foot of the widely visible tower ruins are probably due to this event. The Duke of Jilich wanted to punish the fortress, Friedrich von Somreff, and permanently prevent his robbery. Whether this has succeeded remains in the dark. The complex was already fortified in the Celtic period, in Roman times it was used as a military post, and the Carolingians controlled the Heerstrasse from Aachen to Frankfurt from here. Since the 10th century, it served as the Amtsburg of the Rhineland Palatinate, in order finally to pass the Count of Jülich.
