Andrew Carnegie was a successful industrialist who gave away much of his fortune to fund projects throughout the world, including around 2,500 libraries.
This library in Skipton was partly funded with a grant of £3000 and opened in 1910. It is still used as a library today.
Over the entrance the chimera is a carved symbolic figure of Knowledge and is flanked by carved panels representing Literature and Art.
