In this multi-family dwelling-house at Tarpenbekstrasse 66, Ernst Thälmann lived until his arrest in 1933 by the Gestapo.
Ernst Thälmann (1886-1944) had been Chairman of the Independent Social Democratic Party (USPD) in Hamburg since March 1919 and a member of Hamburg's citizenship. From 1925 to 1933 he was a member of the German Reichstag and chairman of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), who under his leadership developed into a mass party. From 1929 to his arrest on 3 March 1933 Thälmann lived with his family from 1929 in the Tarpenbekstrasse 66 in Hamburg. After being arrested as a political opponent of the Nazi regime, he was imprisoned for nearly eleven and a half years before being murdered in Buchenwald concentration camp in August 1944.
