In Pekin are the courthouse and administrative offices of Tazewell County, which has an entry in Wikipedia.
The center of Pekin is Illinois Route 9 and 29 cross and is the Tazewell County seat. Prominent is the Tazewell County Courthouse, a white stone, 3 story, rectangular building on a block that is bounded by Elizabeth Street, Court Street, S Capitol Street, and 4th Street. Other courts are in the Justice Center on S. Capitol Street. More administration offices are in the MacKenzie Building on S 4th Street.
Tazewell County is an area of land completely on the east side of the Illinois River. It extends south, southwest, east and north east from here. Pekin is the largest city in the county, with about 34,000 people. East Peoria to the north, situated across the river from Peoria, is the next largest. Other communities include Washington, Morton, and Eureka. In 2010, the population had 135,394 people and a total area of 658 square miles (1,700 km2). Together with Peoria County and Putnam County, they form the Tri-County area.
The county was probably named after Littleton Tazewell, who was a U.S. Senator and former governor of Virginia. However, it is also possible the county was named after his father, Henry, who was also a governor of Virginia.
