The "Stone Trolls" or "Silent Sentinels" are two tall stone figures by the ocean separated by a viewing platform that we reach by climbing 4 steps. The statues are looking out for visitors, like silent trolls in nature. These figures were conceived by Áka Gränz to maintain the Icelandic saga heritage and to remember the ancient name for the places in this area. The trolls have all got different names. The names of the Silent Sentinels are Steinn and Sleggja (Bolder and Sledgehammer).
We have seen many of these figures on the Southern Peninsula and on the hills surrounding Keflavík.
"Iceland’s unique environment is equally matched by its distinctive folklore which is rich in tales of aquatic monsters, ghosts, spirits, elves and trolls. Trolls are elusive members of the Icelandic folklore. They only come out after dark because if they are caught in sunlight they turn into stone. The Icelandic countryside is scattered with oddly shaped lava formations that are said to be the bodies of petrified trolls, trapped in stone for all time."
