"5. Wright-Smith House (West McNeal Street): 1867, 2 story frame house with weatherboard
siding, bracketed cornice, front bay window with Italianate detailing, 1 story front
porch. Moved in June 1978 from West Lafayette Street to avoid demolition." ~~ NRHP Nomination Form
"The last-named
building was moved from the northeast corner of Washington and Lafayette Streets
a short distance to its present location on McNeal Street in June 1978. The need
for additional bank parking space necessitated the move, and the present house site
probably duplicates the original as it appeared when the Wright-Smith House was erected
in 1867.: ~ NRHP Nomination Form
"The Wright House was built by Mrs. Thomas Smith in 1867. Ms. Smith had a dream soon after her husband's death. In the dream she was told to move back to Bolivar and build a house in the shadow of the Episcopal Church. In 1978 the house was moved a block away to avoid demolition but it is still across from the church.
"Fletcher Sloan designed this home using Victorian architecture as depicted with its bay window, dental work and latticed porches. There are two stories to the structure of weatherboard, painted yellow with white "gingerbread" trim that reminds one of frosting on a cake.
"For many years it was the home of John and Julia Wright and their two daughters. "Miss Julia" as she was lovingly called was a daughter of Leon Bills. In her nineties she often referred to herself as the "last leaf on the tree" because she was the last of her peers." ~ Visit Historic Bolivar
