The inspiration for the sculpture's form is a rhythm, a horn-shaped drinking vessel that symbolizes both celebration and theater. As the viewer/listener circles the sculpture, a dialogue ensues between the two horns.

Rhytons is a knotted, double-horned bronze sculpture situated near the entrance to the Topfer Theatre. In its form and title, the piece references a drinking vessel used in ancient Greece, not to be put down until emptied. Motion sensors connected to speakers hidden inside the sculpture prompt sounds to emanate from the openings, adding an interactive component to the artwork and making it part of the experience of going to the theater.

Movement near the opening of each horn triggers a motion sensor that activates sound, in the form os a musical or theatrical excerpt.
