Autofahrer freuen sich über das Licht, das ihnen schnell vom anderen Tunnelende entgegen leuchtet. Und Fußgänger sind froh, wenn sie den ungemütlichen Schlauch mit seinem Getöse und den Abgasen hinter sich haben: der Straßentunnel in Altenahr an der B 267.
Er wurde vor 180 Jahren als erster Tunnel in ganz Preußen gebaut und als technische Meisterleistung gefeiert. Neuerdings informiert eine Bronzetafel am oberen Tunneleingang über die Bedeutung des in alten Reiseführern als "Kunstgewölbe von Altenahr" gefeierten Bauwerks.
Als erster Passant hatte Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm den noch unfertigen engen künstlichen Felsspalt durchschritten. Das war im Jahre 1833, ein Jahr vor Vollendung und feierlicher Eröffnung des Werks. Mit der Freigabe war die erste durchgehende Fahrstraße im Ahrtal vollendet.
Gekostet hatte das Werk 5000 Taler. Es war ursprünglich 192 Fuß lang, 16 Fuß hoch und 20 Fuß breit. 1867 wurde seine Breite dem zunehmenden Verkehr angepasst, und im November 1969 wurde das Bauwerk zum heutigen Zustand ausgebaut.
Bei der offiziellen Präsentation der Bronzetafel sagte Stifter Eugen Dick, der Betreiber der Sommerrodelbahn Altenahr, dass er sich freue, einen Beitrag zum Touristenort Altenahr leisten zu können. Vor dem Tunnelbau sah es schlecht aus für die Menschen östlich und westlich der "Breitlei". Von Reimerzhoven nach Altenahr gab es nur steile Pfade durch die Berge oder schmale Wege entlang der Ahr.
Der Tunnel, ursprünglich als Meisterwerk bestaunt, ist mittlerweile Alltag. An seinem wichtigen Zweck, einer Verbindung für Menschen und Waren, hat sich indes nichts geändert."

The tunnel, originally admired as a masterpiece, is now everyday life. However, nothing has changed in its important purpose, a link for people and goods."
