Fothringham Hill is a wooded hill south of Forfar in the centre of the county of Angus. It is well seen to the east of the A90 dual-carriageway as it heads south to Dundee. The hill is isolated and detached from the Sidlaw Hills immediately to the south. Although steeper on all sides the summit area covers a vast area of ground and is gently undulating. The actual summit is north of the pillar at 254 metres, the pillar being at 250 metres. In recent years there has been considerable felling of the forest that covered the summit. The pillar is in good condition but around a third is covered in moss and lichen.

STEEPNESS: A fairly gentle gradient with the hill getting less steep in its upper reaches.

TERRAIN: A good track rises up the hill from the south-west, bound for the telecommunications antenna that is situated 200 yards west of the pillar. In total contrast these last 200 yards are a mix of felled wood, bracken and dirt with no clear path to the pillar.

ACCESSIBILITY: The most accessible route is from the church at Inverarity, just over a mile to the south-west. From the church car park the B9127 heads north for a few hundred yards to a left hand bend where the track up the hill bears right, (notice at start proclaims no dogs).

NAVIGATION: After heading west up the hill, the track to the antenna appears on the left after half a mile. With all the tree felling the pillar is now clearly in view on the right on reaching the end of the track. From here it is around 200 yards in an easterly bearing.

DANGER: The final few yards are fraught with hazards due to the nature of the terrain.
