Fountain Square park was laid out as a memorial to firefighters who died in a devastating fire that broke out in the Beehive Store along Market Street in downtown Chattanooga in 1887. The firefighters died tragically when the building exploded.
This memorial fountain was installed a few years later at this spot.
In recent years the Chattanooga Fire Department has added two new memorials here, one with the names of the two firefighters in whose memory this fountain was built and the other with the names of other CFD and Hamilton County firemen who have died in the line of duty since.
