The grave site is very elaborate. On the bottom right panel of the tombstone is an hourglass resting atop a winged skull. The inscription on this tombstone is in Latin. The English translation of the inscription follows:
"To a man truely good, and excellent citizen, John Byres of Coittes, six years together thesaurer of this city, two years city baillie and suburban-baillie; six years Dean of Guild, and two years Old Provest: his wife, A. S., and his children have erected this homely monument. He died, much lamented, 24th November, the year of Christ 1629, and of his age the 60 year." (visit link) (visit link)
"The monument of John Byres of Coates, 1629, was one of the last works of the royal master mason William Wallace."
