Craigie Point
James Craigie worked as a trapper for the Hudson Bay Company in the Oregon Territory. He married the daughter of a Bannock Indian chief, and they had several daughters. Craige claimed land here in 1866 when the Yaquina Bay area of the Coast Reservation was opened to settlement.
Mary Craigie, daughter of James, married Sam Case who named and platted Newport and built the Ocean House, this area’s first resort hotel. After Sam’s death, Mary and her children continued to operate the Ocean House. Mary became widely respected as a businesswoman.
