"Oosterweel (older names are Ousterweel, Austruweel, Osterwele and Otserwele - first mention in 1210) is a disappeared Belgian polder village north of the city of Antwerp.
At the place of the former village there are now the Antwerp petroleum docks. Until the change, Oosterweel was the lowest-lying village in Belgium. In 1900, at the peak, there were 1075 inhabitants.
To the west of the Antwerp Noordkasteel, in the depths of the Kastelweg, the old church of Oosterweel and a bridge on the former Oosterweelsesteenweg are still a monument.
The territory of the former municipality of Oosterweel, which existed until 1929, forms part of the Antwerp district (along with that of the former municipalities Oorderen and Wilmarsdonk) under the zip code 2030.
The name of the village is used in a possible storm surge on the Zeeschelde: the Oosterweelkering and the controversial project for a future closure of the Antwerp Ring via the Oosterweel connection.
Other disappeared polder villages are: Lillo, Oorderen and Wilmarsdonk."
