In the years between 1888 and 1891, prior to his election as Australia’s first prime minister, Sir Edmund Barton lived with his family in a cottage in Balgowlah near Manly. The building was made in 1877 for a Sydney merchant, William Jackson. The street intersecting White Street at the intersection was named Jackson Street after William Jackson. Whitehall is an example of mid Victorian Gothic architecture. At this stage in Australia's development Victorian architecture was common style for buildings at the time.
At the time Barton lived there the house was a large seven room villa and the land it sat on was more than seven acres, which extended out to North Harbour. The house at the time had its own stable and out buildings. At the time Barton lived there he had named the building 'Calahla' While living there Barton was a Member of Parliament and the Federation movement in NSW. In 1891 Sir Edmund Barton moved to Manly and 'Calahla' become Winchester College a boarding school for boys. Later in 1913 the land was divided up sold.
