Walter Furneaux's death was reported in the Barrier Miner, Broken Hill on 22 March 1933 as:
Fell Into River; Boat Swamped
SYDNEY, Wednesday.
Walter Furneaux (28) lost his life in Mullet Creek, Brooklyn last night. With Percy Singleton (27) and William Hageboome (30), who were holidaying with him, Furneaux rowed out into the stream to do some fishing. While dragging the net over the side of the boat Furneaux slipped and collided with Singleton, both falling into the water. The boat then tilted and became swamped. The three men started for the river bank, but Furneaux suddenly disappeared. His companions endeavored to locate him, without result, and then made for the shore. Furneaux's body was recovered some time later.
