Canada's Last Battle against an invading power
In the final days of the War of 1812, an American force of about 700 mounted Kentuckians led by Brigadier-General Duncan McArthur invaded Upper Canada intending to burn all the mills that supplied British Forces and decimate the economy.
On November 6 1814, McArthur attacked a body of some 150 militia here at Malcolm's Mills (Oakland). Upper Canada forces, comprising elements of the 1st and 2nd Norfolk, 1st Oxford, and 1st Middlesex regiments, engaged the American forces in the battle but were defeated. McArthur's men burned both of the mills to the ground. The stalwart pioneers of this area endured great hardship trying to recover from the effects of this battle
