First mentioned in 1150, the current incarnation of Burg Steinegg was built in 1461 by Dieter VII von Gemmingen. Even though there was much conflict in the region during the Thirty Years War and the War for Palatinate Succession, the caslte survived. A fire in 1694 burned it down and rebuilding took place in 1695. The castle was sold to the state of Baden in 1839, but the state did nothing with it and eventually it fell to ruin. In 1931, a section was rebuilt, which became a youth center in 1958 and is still used to this day.
The grounds are free to visit, including the attached cemetery, maintained by the Lutheran church. The youth center/hostel is used by various groups. The main castle is still ruins.
