Howard B. Gray worked for the General Electric Co. as a clerk. He enlisting to join his brother in Company K, 1st Infantry Regiment of the Connecticut National Guard on November 20, 1916. With the outbreak of WWI, the 1st Infantry Regiment was called into service on March 26, 1917.
During the mobilization for World War I the 1st Infantry Regiment was combined with the 2nd Infantry Regiment to form the 102nd Infantry Regiment of the 26th Infantry Division, the famed Yankee Division, on August 24, 1917. On September 15, 1917 the unit left for Southampton, England. Howard B. Gray was wounded during the Battle of Chateau Thierry and died of his wound in the 103rd Field Hospital, 26th Infantry Division on July 21, 1918.
